A good fit for
Riders comfortable steering, braking and passing others on a shared path. Choose the shorter option if the group is still building stamina.
Arrival & parking
Jells Park has access from Waverley Road and Ferntree Gully Road. The Waverley Road approach is a useful starting point for the café side; check the current park map and gate notices.
Toilets & water
The Lake Trail upgrade includes drinking fountains and a bike repair station. Use the park visitor map for toilets and accessible facilities, and carry your own water.

Let the park do the entertaining: a short shared-use loop, lake views and play time before heading home. This is an outing to take slowly, with a café or picnic pause doing as much work as the riding.

Parks Victoria describes the Lake Trail as an approximately 2.5 km loop around the café and playspaces. Allow extra for the connection from your chosen car park; it is not the longer 5 km Bushland Trail. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

Follow the ride.

  1. Start / Join the Lake Trail

    Find the Lake Trail signs

Use the park map to reach the Lake Trail from your parking area. Agree on one direction and stay together at the first junction.

  2. On the loop / Lake views and playspaces

    Ride the short circuit

Follow Lake Trail wayfinding rather than paths heading away on the wider network. Walk through crowded café and playground approaches.

  3. About 2.5 km / Back at your trail entry

    Return for a longer pause

Complete the loop and put the bikes aside. If the first circuit was plenty, make the rest of the outing a picnic rather than adding more laps.

MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING

An out-and-back is fine

Ride for five to ten minutes and return along the same shared path. Give way while turning and save the rest of your time for play.

Places to pause.

Along the way

Walkers, runners and children use this trail too. Expect sudden changes of direction near playspaces and keep stopping areas clear.

These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.

A couple of useful answers.

Does the loop follow the whole lake edge?

The published Lake Trail loops around the café and playspaces with lake views. Follow that named circuit rather than assuming every lakeside path is part of it.

Should we add the Bushland Trail?

Only as a separately planned extension. It is about 5 km and includes gravel; it is not included in this 2.5 km outing.

IF YOU’RE CHOOSING A BIKE

Start with the ride.

A comfortable everyday bike with reliable brakes suits this outing. Check tyre condition, fit and the surface notes before leaving; use the bike you already have if it suits the ride.
