A good fit for
Riders ready for a longer outing and a gradual outward climb. Allow enough energy and daylight for the return after lunch.
Arrival & parking
Join near West Park Reserve on Main Road, McLaren Vale. The trail guide identifies parking off Valley View Drive near the RSL tank.
Toilets & water
The trail guide lists toilets near the McLaren Vale parking and the Willunga endpoint. Bring water; add a town stop if you need supplies.

Make a half-day of the McLaren Vale–Willunga section of the Coast to Vines trail. The outward leg climbs gently towards Willunga, with a town stop before you return through the vines.

The published section is 8 km each way. This itinerary is a return ride of about 16 km, excluding detours. An 8 km one-way outing needs a separately arranged pickup. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

Follow the ride.

Cumulative distances for the published section. Café and town detours add distance.

  1. Start / McLaren Vale / West Park

    Join the Shiraz Trail

Head towards Willunga on the signed trail. Allow for the gradual climb, especially if someone in the group has not ridden this far before.

  2. About 8 km / Willunga rose garden

    Pause at Willunga

The section ends at the car park by the Jubilee Rose Garden and playground. A town visit adds a little distance and street navigation.

  3. About 16 km / Return to McLaren Vale

    Retrace your ride

Return along the same trail to McLaren Vale. Keep your pace comfortable through crossings and shared sections, even on the easier gradient.

MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING

Shorten the return, or arrange a pickup

An earlier turnaround keeps the outing flexible. Riding only the 8 km one-way section requires transport arranged in advance; do not assume a bus can take the whole group and their bikes.

Places to pause.

At the turnaround on Aldinga Road

Willunga Jubilee Rose Garden

Council lists picnic space, tables, shelter and a playground. This makes a useful pause before you decide whether to explore the town or start the return.

Council garden & facilities

A separate short trip beyond the trail endpoint

Willunga town centre

The trail guide places the township a few hundred metres from the old station. Allow for street navigation and a little extra riding or walking; check your chosen lunch stop’s hours.

Trail access & town information

Along the way

This is a longer outing, not a learner circuit. Check road crossings and driveway entrances. Carry water, leave time for breaks and shorten the ride in hot or windy conditions.

These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.

A couple of useful answers.

Is the ride 8 km or 16 km?

The published McLaren Vale–Willunga section is about 8 km one way. Returning to the same starting point makes this approximately 16 km, before any detours.

Does the route climb Willunga Hill?

No. The suggested turnaround is at the rose garden and former station area in Willunga. The road climb beyond town is not part of this outing.

IF YOU’RE CHOOSING A BIKE

Start with the ride.

A comfortable bike with useful low gears is a good match. Pedal assistance is an option for the gradual climb; choose around fit and how you will transport the bike.
