A good fit for
Riders who can manage roughly nine kilometres and share space patiently. For a first bike lesson, a contained practice area is a better fit.
Arrival & parking
Council lists parking at Berry Reserve off Pittwater Road, as well as Jamieson Park and Middle Creek Reserve. Check restrictions at your chosen car park.
Toilets & water
Check council amenity information before leaving and carry drinking water. Do not rely on the proposed replacement facilities at Jamieson Park being open.

A lagoon lap makes a satisfying small adventure: set off together, take the long way around the water and finish where you began. This is a shared recreational trail, so choose a social pace and let the stops shape the morning.

Council sources describe the full loop as 8.4 km and 8.6 km. Allow about 8.6 km, plus any detours from your parking place; this is one circuit, not a return distance. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

  1. Start / Berry Reserve

    Start at Berry Reserve

Join the signed lagoon trail. Look at the council map together before choosing a direction; stay on the lagoon circuit at junctions.

  2. Around the lagoon / Signed multi-use trail

    Follow the lagoon circuit

Continue around the lagoon on the multi-use trail, keeping clear of walkers and stopping off the riding line. Middle Creek Reserve is one possible place to pause.

  3. Finish / Berry Reserve

    Complete the lap

Follow the signed connection back to Berry Reserve. Allow extra time through busy reserve entrances rather than trying to recover a fast average pace.

MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING

Try a short lakeside return

Ride out for 10–15 minutes, stop together and retrace the same trail. That gives you a taste of the lagoon without committing to the circuit.

Places to pause.

Start and finish

Berry Reserve

Make this your meeting place and leave time for a final snack after the lap. Establish a clear meeting point before children set off.

Council: lagoon access and circuit

On the lagoon circuit

Middle Creek Reserve

Use a reserve pause to check energy levels and enjoy the water from the shore. Keep bicycles clear of access points and boating activity.

Council: lagoon access and circuit

Along the way

Keep speed low at narrow sections and around dogs on leads. A complete lap commits you to a longer outing than a short out-and-back; turn around early if anyone is struggling.

These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.

A couple of useful answers.

Is it 8.4 km or 8.6 km?

Council publishes both figures. We use a range and filter this outing at 8.6 km; your access path and stops may add distance.

Is it a sealed road-bike circuit?

Council describes a well-formed shared track, not an entirely sealed road course. Choose tyres and a pace that suit changing trail surfaces.

IF YOU’RE CHOOSING A BIKE

Start with the ride.

Choose a bike you can control comfortably at low speed, with working brakes and gears that suit the gradients. Check fit and transport arrangements before buying for this outing.
