Begin near the Lagoon and take a short ride north along the Esplanade. The waterfront offers plenty to look at, so leave room in the morning for pauses instead of trying to cover the whole city.
RideFinder suggests a distance cap of 2 km north from the Lagoon precinct and back, up to 4 km total. Council’s full Esplanade cycling route is 2.7 km one way; this plan uses only part of it. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

- 0 km / Lagoon precinct
Join the cycling route
From the Lagoon precinct, locate the route shown on council’s Esplanade map. Follow the cycling/shared-path signs north and walk through pedestrian-only areas.
- By 2 km / Northern turnaround
Turn before the morning grows hot
Ride slowly past the waterfront activity areas. Stop clear of the path and turn by 2 km outward, or sooner if it is hot or busy.
- Up to 4 km / Back at the Lagoon
Return to the Lagoon precinct
Retrace the same cycling route. Park the bikes before entering any play or swimming area, and keep a separate allowance for those activities.
MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING
A short waterfront look
Turn after 500 metres to 1 km. That leaves more time for sitting in the shade and makes the return manageable for newer riders.
Places to pause.
On your outward ride
Waterfront pause
Pull fully off the route before watching birds or taking photos. Bring your own snack so the stop can happen whenever the group needs it.

Lagoon precinct
Keep the ride and any swim separate. Check current pool access and supervision arrangements before promising a swimming finish.
Council: Esplanade facilities and noticesAlong the way
Expect walkers and children stepping towards the path. Keep clear of the foreshore water and follow wildlife warnings; this is not a beach-swimming itinerary.
These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.
A couple of useful answers.
Is four kilometres the full council route?
No. It is our shorter return outing: up to 2 km outward, then back. The council map describes a 2.7 km one-way route.
Can we ride through every waterfront space?
Follow the designated cycling route and local signs. Dismount in pedestrian-only or crowded areas rather than assuming every paved surface permits riding.
