Begin near the Regatta Grounds and give yourself a simple rule: ride a little of the cycleway, stop while the group is fresh, then come back. This takes the long commuter corridor and turns it into a manageable river-side outing.
This suggested outing has a 6 km cap: turn no later than 3 km from your starting point and return the same way. It is not the full 15.6 km Intercity Cycleway or a measured distance to Cornelian Bay. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

- Start / McVilly Drive / Cenotaph
Start beside the Regatta Grounds
Join the Intercity Cycleway near McVilly Drive and follow the signed route north, alongside the Derwent. Stay on the cycleway rather than taking a bridge approach.
- By 3 km / Your chosen turnaround
Pass beneath the Tasman Bridge
Continue only as far as the group comfortably wants to ride. Turn at 3 km from the start or earlier; reaching a named attraction is not required.
- Up to 6 km / Back at the start
Retrace to the Cenotaph
Return along the same corridor and stop clear of the commuter line when regrouping. Finish with a pause near the Regatta Grounds.
MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING
A short bridge-view return
Make the Tasman Bridge area an optional earlier turnaround, provided it fits the group’s energy and conditions. Stay beneath the bridge on the cycleway.

Regatta Grounds
Use the riverside setting for a pause before or after riding. Keep bicycles out of the through-path while discussing the plan.
City of Hobart: Intercity CyclewayOptional separate extension
Cornelian Bay
The playground is a side trip from the wider cycleway. It is not guaranteed within this distance cap: consult the map and add distance and crossing time if you choose to visit.
Greater Hobart Trails: interactive cycleway mapAlong the way
The wider cycleway includes road crossings and carries commuters in both directions. Keep left, leave passing room and stop before a crossing if the group needs to regroup.
These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.
A couple of useful answers.
Does this ride reach Mona?
No. Mona is farther along the wider cycleway. This outing turns back within three kilometres of the selected start.
Do we cross the Tasman Bridge?
No. Stay on the northbound Intercity Cycleway beneath the bridge. Crossing to the eastern shore is a different trip.
