A good fit for
Learners who want short, repeatable laps and a play break. Start in the junior circuit; skate ramps are a different activity.
Arrival & parking
Use the Recreation Plaza car park from Oaklands Road, opposite Hamley Street. It is next to the junior track; allow time to find a space.
Toilets & water
Picnic and play facilities are in the wider reserve. Toilets are reported in the precinct; check their location on arrival. Bring drinking water.

Build a small outing around the junior bike track at Oaklands Recreation Plaza. Keep the riding local, then put the bikes aside for a break in the adjoining reserve precinct.

No fixed distance. The time allowance includes a short practice session and a break, rather than continuous riding. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

A small session. A good start.

Stay around the junior track. The wetlands are an optional walk, not a prescribed cycling loop.

  1. Arrive / Oaklands Road plaza

    Find the junior track

Start at the junior bike circuit rather than the skate ramps. Walk across the car park and check the riding space before getting on.

  2. Ride / Junior circuit laps

    Keep the goal small

Practise looking ahead, giving space and stopping smoothly. Pause between laps so the rider stays comfortable and in control.

  3. Pause / Reserve picnic or play

    Add a picnic break

The wider Oaklands precinct includes reserve space, play facilities and wetlands. Park the bikes for a break; this guide does not prescribe a cycling loop around the wetland.

MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING

Keep it to the junior circuit

Skip the longer wander around the precinct. Alternate a few laps with a seated break and finish when the rider’s concentration starts to fade.

Places to pause.

Junior bike circuit

Use repeat laps to work on looking ahead and stopping comfortably. Stay with the junior circuit instead of treating the neighbouring skate features as the next stage.

Council location & arrival directions

An optional break beyond the circuit

Oaklands reserve and wetland

Put the bikes aside for a picnic or a walk in the wider precinct. Council also lists guided wetland walks; bookings and suitability apply to those separately organised events.

Council wetland walks

Along the way

The junior track and skate park serve different activities. Watch for other users and supervise children near the car park and water. Check signs before exploring beyond the practice area.

These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.

A couple of useful answers.

Is this the skate park?

The junior bike circuit is beside the Recreation Plaza car park. This outing focuses on that circuit, not the skate ramps or a longer trail ride.

Does the visit include a wetland tour?

No. The riding suggestion is self-guided. Council’s organised wetland walks are a separate activity with their own bookings, dates and access notes.

IF YOU’RE CHOOSING A BIKE

Start with the ride.

Use a bike that the learner can handle comfortably at low speed. For a growing child, choose fit now rather than a large frame to grow into.
