A good fit for
Young riders practising starts, turns and controlled stops with an accompanying adult. Community access is independent practice, not a booked lesson.
Arrival & parking
Arrive at the Military Road centre in West Beach Parks. Check entry, parking and community availability with SAPOL before travelling.
Toilets & water
Bring your own bike, helmet and water. Ask the centre about toilet access when confirming your visit; do not rely on classroom facilities being open.

Check community access: weekends, weekdays 8–10am and after 3pm, including school holidays. SAPOL says these are guide times only; confirm availability before travelling and follow the gate signs.

Make starting, stopping and turning the whole outing. SAPOL’s mock roadway gives young riders a place to practise with intersections, crossings and road signs before a longer trip.

A practice session rather than a measured route. Finish when concentration starts to fade, even if you have time left. Time is a planning allowance, not a measured ride time.

A small session. A good start.

A suggested practice session, with no fixed route distance.

  1. Arrive / Check the centre gates

    Check access first

SAPOL lists community access on weekends, weekdays 8–10am and after 3pm, including school holidays. These are guide times: check availability with the centre before travelling.

  2. Practise / Short mock-roadway laps

    Pick one skill

Bring your own bicycle and helmet. Start with controlled stops, then add looking before turning. Give other learners plenty of space.

  3. Finish / Water and a rest

    Finish on a good lap

Keep the session short enough to stay enjoyable. A confident final stop is a better finish than another ten tired laps.

MAKE IT A SMALLER OUTING

Make one skill the whole visit

A few comfortable starts and stops can be enough. Take a break while the rider still wants another lap, rather than using a target distance or finishing time.

Places to pause.

The main activity

The mock roadway

Choose one feature to practise together, then pause away from moving riders. The centre’s downloadable activity sheets explain how to use the roadway.

SAPOL activity sheets & access times

Optional separate activity in the precinct

The Square at West Beach Parks

SAPOL lists this play space and BBQ area as an option for combining activities. Check its location and arrange the transfer separately; this guide does not map a child-safe cycling connection.

Along the way

Do not enter when the gates display “DO NOT ENTER”; SAPOL sessions take priority. Community use of the roadway is not a supervised lesson.

These are bicycle outings. Scooter access and e-bike requirements need a separate check for the device and location.

A couple of useful answers.

Do we need to bring a bike?

Yes. Bring the rider’s own bicycle and helmet for community use. A family practice visit is different from an organised education session.

Can we turn up during school holidays?

School holidays follow the published weekday access windows. Check with SAPOL before travelling and obey the signs at the gates. The hours for operating traffic lights are not a guarantee that the roadway is open to the public.

IF YOU’RE CHOOSING A BIKE

Start with the ride.

For a learner, manageable size and easy-to-reach brakes matter more than equipment upgrades. A well-fitting existing bike is a good starting point.
